Rawafed Strengthens Digital Backbone of Libya’s Oil and Gas Fields

Rawafed Strengthens Digital Backbone of Libya’s Oil and Gas Fields

As Libya works to enhance production capacity and modernize field operations, telecommunications infrastructure is playing an increasingly strategic role in supporting upstream efficiency and security.

Speaking to Energy Capital & Power at the Libya Energy and Economic Summit (LEES) in Tripoli, Nabil Sassi, General Manager of Rawafed Libya for Telecommunication and Technology, highlighted how locally built ICT infrastructure is underpinning operations across some of the country’s most remote oil and gas assets.

Connectivity to remote production sites remains a critical challenge in Libya, where vast desert terrain separates key oil fields from urban infrastructure. Rawafed has prioritized extending its network to these locations.

“Our network is supported by our multi-years agreement with Eutelsat OneWeb to provide backbone and backup connections to the oil fields through high-speed LEO satellite connectivity. We do also focus on providing some services to residential users in main cities like Tripoli and Benghazi and other cities,” Sassi said.

Beyond connectivity, Rawafed has developed fully integrated ICT solutions for the oil and gas sector, including data centers, digital oilfield technologies and IoT solutions such as CCTV and security systems. Its offerings enable remote wellhead monitoring and smart rig management through satellite connectivity, helping operators maintain oversight, improve efficiency and strengthen safety across Libya’s upstream operations.

Reflecting on the importance of sector-wide engagement, Sassi said, “Such a summit and such events are great opportunities to meet with the market leaders and decision makers in the oil and gas industry.” Sassi explained that LEES provides a platform to expand the company’s network, showcase its services and demonstrate how its solutions can make daily operations easier, faster and more efficient for operators.

As Libya works to stabilize and expand production, digital infrastructure—including fiber, satellite, and smart field technologies—is becoming a core pillar of the country’s modernizing energy sector.
