Digital Innovation in Libya’s Oil and Gas Sector
)
With the upcoming Libya Energy & Economic Summit (LEES) 2026 conference expanding its technical agenda, the spotlight is firmly on digital deployment, local talent development and the integration of data-driven decision-making into core oilfield operations.
Enabling Smart Oilfields
The Libyan Council for Oil, Gas & Renewable Energy is prioritizing investment in modern infrastructure across the exploration, processing and distribution value chain, while also promoting innovation, research and development to enhance energy efficiency. On the digital front, oilfield services company SLB is combining electric submersible pump performance tools with AI-powered video analytics to enhance production, improve security and cut well-site visits by over 90%.
The firm has drilling contracts for wells in the Nesr and Al Waha fields, as well as in the southwest region. As such, these solutions are enabling smarter, faster decision-making and boosting operational efficiency. SLB also emphasizes workforce upskilling to meet the demands of the digital oilfield.
In parallel, Tumi Law Firm is helping lay the regulatory groundwork for international tech-driven partnerships by promoting legal reforms that make it easier for foreign companies to enter and operate in Libya’s oil sector.
Pioneering Digital Integration in Libya’s Oilfields
Libya’s upstream sector is steadily adopting real-time automation, remote surveillance and data analytics to modernize field operations. Libyan service company AOSCO Oilfield Services, in partnership with Sirte Oil Company – a subsidiary of Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) –, has introduced a digital gas lift well monitoring and control system that allows for continuous observation of pressure flow rates and production data.
AOSCO Oilfield Services has implemented a remote monitoring system that allows for continuous observation of key wellsite parameters such as pressure, flow rates and production data. This setup supports timely operational decisions, helps reduce the likelihood of manual errors and contributes to minimizing equipment downtime.
Meanwhile, internet service provider Rawafed Libya has partnered with satellite telecommunications company Inmarsat to deliver satellite-based data services to oil and gas operators across Libya. The partnership enables real-time monitoring of infrastructure – including wellheads and production sites – in remote areas, supporting operational efficiency, safety and asset management.
AI, Seismic Data & Predictive Exploration
The NOC is actively exploring the use of AI and machine learning to revolutionize hydrocarbon exploration. In association with crude oil industry corporation the Arabian Gulf Oil Company, the NOC is planning to apply AI in processing seismic data – accelerating exploration timelines, increasing resource discovery accuracy and reducing costs.
The growing application of AI in subsurface analysis, reservoir modeling and production forecasting aligns with Libya’s ambition to become a data-smart oil producer. Advanced analytics are being used to interpret legacy data, assess geological viability of unexplored basins and predict the commercial viability of mature fields. These capabilities will not only improve field development but also increase investor confidence by providing more transparent and reliable data.
As such, the fourth edition of LEES, scheduled for January 24-26, 2026, will feature an expanded technical agenda, building on the momentum of prior editions. Technical sessions will delve deep into themes of exploration innovations, field digitalization, engineering advancements and AI in production workflows. Attendees can expect to explore real-world use cases, network with technology providers and engage with leaders spearheading Libya’s digital oilfield initiatives.
